Chapter 21

Once the science classes arrived back at the school, every student trudged slowly off the bus. Having expected to basically have a free day at Cottonmill, they were all visibly upset that they had to return to their usual Friday schedules. Teachers included.

As Laney redistributed all the rocks and minerals they’d collected to her backpack, Lee pulled Kael off to the rear of the bus and started firing questions at him.

“So when do you want to talk about this? Now or after school? Don’t you have a free period soon? Mine’s right now. Wait, you probably don’t want to talk about it here, huh? After school then? You said I can finally meet old man Shen too, right? Do you—”

“Lee,” Kael cut in, encouraging his friend to take a breath. “Chill. I’ll explain everything after we drop Laney off.”

Both boys looked to find her stepping down from the bus, zipping up her now oversized bag of rocks and slinging it over her shoulder.

“Understood,” Lee replied with a wink and finger guns.

“So weird, dude.”

Lee shrugged. “I’ll see you after school th—” He stopped and smacked his palm against his forehead. “Crap!”

“What?” Kael asked.

“I can’t give you guys a ride home today,” he explained. “I have to take my little sister to cheer after school and stay with her until her practice is over. Mom got a new job, and Dad wants me to take on more responsibility and—”

“Lee,” Kael interrupted again. He was getting a headache from how fast his friend was talking. “It’s fine. Just come over tomorrow sometime. I’ll tell you everything then.”

Lee still looked disappointed but knew he didn’t have a choice but to wait. “Okay,” he sighed. He started backing away as Laney approached them. “You promise, though? Tomorrow morning?”

“Yeah,” Kael replied. “Promise.”

Lee kept backing away until he finally turned and disappeared behind the large glass double doors of the front of the school. Kael waited for Laney.

“What was that about?” she asked, handing the empty backpack to him as the bus pulled away with a screech.

“Nothing,” he replied. “Lee stuff.”

“Ah.” Laney nodded in understanding. “Well, I’ll take these to Ms. Gilbert for us.”

“I’ll walk you,” Kael said, offering to take the bag from her shoulder. When she let him, it dropped to the ground like a ton of bricks. Or at least a hundred pounds of solid rock. It had to weigh almost as much as Laney herself, who was staring at him with a smirk.

He stared back in confusion. How did she always make things look so effortless?

Shrugging off his initial failure, Kael hefted the cumbersome load over his shoulder and led the way around the outside of the school.

“So what’s our next move?” he asked, desperate to avoid any awkward silences.

“I don’t know,” Laney said. “We have to get one of them alone to see if Lee’s theory about your necklace really works, but it’s not like we can just break into one of their houses while they’re sleeping. And they’re all typical jocks.
